The power of print to move people
22nd Mar 2016For millions of years we have used our senses to explore the world and navigate our way through the environment, but how is digital media affecting this? The advent of the digital age has given us access to instantaneous information at the simple click of a mouse or press of a touchscreen; this, in turn, has led to boundless developments in access to education, marketing and global connectivity, but at what cost?
Feed your senses
While digital media has been an outstanding breakthrough for science, business, and broadcasting, as well as providing the masses with information at their fingertips (quite literally); it can never really be more than pixels on a screen. Print, on the other hand, is a whole different experience. The creative art of using words and imagery to tell a story, portray an opinion or showcase an idea has been around for thousands of years. Unlike digital media, printed words and imagery create a deeper connection by its very nature – it evokes our neglected senses and creates an experience which is more than just visual.
When we take advantage of the emotive essence of print in its physical state, our message can be conveyed to our audience in its truest form. The act of holding a physical print in your hands, whether it is a book, poster, brochure, wedding invitation, business card or a letter, awakens your senses. You hang on their every word; you feel the quality of the materials before you and the subtle, unique ‘fresh print’ smell helps to feed your imagination. A truly exquisite print encapsulates attention-grasping-tactility that digital media can only dream of, and while digital media has grown exponentially over recent years, it will never have the emotive delight, nor the longevity of print.
The power of print
A printed product gives your readers a tactile and multi-sensual experience where the feel, finish, size and quality of the paper or card add to the majesty of your chosen words or imagery. This makes print incredibly versatile, allowing you to choose exactly how your message is portrayed and how your reader will feel. You can choose from a range of paper densities, textures and raw materials, simple or luxurious finishes, lamination, embossed or debossed, litho or digital print – the list is almost endless. The wonderful thing is that all these choices can influence your readers’ thoughts, feelings and emotions in a way that digital media simply can’t.
Print is alive, even when it is a century old!
A great way to think about how print can boost your concentration and affect your feelings is to imagine reading a world renowned classic novel. Do you think William Shakespeare’s well chosen words would have quite as much impact on your imagination if you read them on a flat screen device that beams light into your eyeballs and makes you feel tired and groggy, compared to holding a wonderfully crafted leather-bound book filled with thick quality paper with deep, rich paper smells, covered in ink that you can almost feel? Of course, there is a place for digital, and sometimes you’d choose the instant, disposable convenience of electronic communications, but when you really need your materials to move people to action, you would be foolish to overlook print.
Whether you are writing the next big blockbuster, designing new and funky marketing material or creating a simple press release is irrelevant – print, regardless of the size or target audience has an incredible power to impart emotive feelings upon an individual or group, and we certainly don’t think digital media can ever replace that.
