Proud to support The Woodland Trust Carbon Capture Scheme
11th Feb 2020At Ashley House, we’re committed to ensuring our business is as environmentally-friendly as possible, that’s why we’re proud to support and work with some fantastic environmental charities, organisations and campaigns, including The Woodland Trust, the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity. Since 2014, we have been members of their Carbon Capture Scheme through purchasing carbon captured paper via Premier Paper Group to help us reduce our carbon footprint.
We are the largest contributor to the Carbon Capture Scheme in the South West, purchasing at least 60 tonnes of carbon captured paper annually and are pleased to share that between 2014 and 2019, we captured approximately 413.457 tonnes of CO2, creating approximately 10,336.43 sqm of new native woodland in the UK – that’s around 2,073 trees.
There are over 240 other eco-conscious businesses involved in the scheme too, and the collaborative results are fantastic. At the end of 2019, The Woodland Trust and Premier Paper Group were able to celebrate hitting the £1,000,000 milestone, planting more than 238,000 trees and capturing over 59,000 tonnes of CO2 – that’s as heavy as 11,000 elephants or in paper terms, 11.3 billion sheets of A4 paper.
Not only do we support the Woodland Trust through our paper purchases, but we also volunteer our time at least once a year, actively taking part in local tree planting activities. Volunteering is always a tiring day, but getting our hands dirty and helping to restore native woodland leaves us with a great sense of achievement, knowing the work we have done will help restore woodland, improving the environment for wildlife and plants that are under threat of extinction.
These results are fantastic, but there is always more to be done. At the beginning of 2020, the trust published an emergency tree plan for the UK, stating that annual rates of woodland creation need to be more than doubled immediately to increase tree cover, help tackle climate and nature emergencies and to help the UK reach its targets for net zero carbon emissions. Everyone is able to get involved, businesses, individuals, families – the more people we can get planting trees, restoring and protecting woodland, the better!
